Sacred History & Legend

Kalighat Temple is one of the Shakti Peeths, associated with the right toes of Sati. It is the temple of Kali for the people of Kolkata and many Bengali families have worshipped here for generations. The present temple was built in the early nineteenth century, and the area around it became the city’s Kalikata, from which Kolkata takes its name.
